INTRODUCTION
Jason: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Filipino learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Jason: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question What are you doing? In Filipino this is
Mayumi: Anong ginagawa mo?
Jason: The first word in the question is
Mayumi: Anong
Jason: meaning What in English.
Mayumi: (Slow, by syllable) Anong
Jason: Listen again and repeat.
Mayumi: Anong
{Pause}
Jason: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Mayumi: ginagawa
Jason: meaning something like doing.
Mayumi: (Slow, by syllable) ginagawa
Jason: Now repeat.
Mayumi: ginagawa

Jason: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Mayumi: Anong ginagawa

Jason: meaning something like you.

Jason: meaning something like thinking.
Mayumi: (Slow, by syllable) Nag-iisip
Jason: Now repeat
Mayumi: Nag-iisip
{Pause}
Jason: And next
Mayumi: lang
Jason: means just, or only.
Mayumi: (Slow, by syllable) lang
Jason: Now repeat.
Mayumi: lang
{Pause}
Jason: And next
Mayumi: ako
Jason: means I.
Mayumi: (Slow, by syllable) ako
Jason: Now repeat.
Mayumi: ako

Jason: Listen to the speaker say, I'm just thinking., and then repeat.
Mayumi: Nag-iisip lang ako.

Jason: To make another phrase, replace thinking with eating.
Mayumi: kumakain
Jason: eating
Mayumi: (slow) kumakain (regular) kumakain
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with eating
Mayumi: kumakain lang ako.
Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace thinking. Say I'm just eating.

Mayumi: kumakain lang ako.
Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace eating with reading.
Mayumi: nagbabasa
Jason: reading
Mayumi: (slow) nagbabasa (regular) nagbabasa
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with reading
Mayumi: nagbabasa lang ako.
Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for eating. Say I'm just reading.

Jason: To expand on the pattern, replace reading with shopping.
Mayumi: namimili
Jason: shopping
Mayumi: (slow) namimili (regular) namimili
Jason: Listen to the phrase again, this time with shopping
Mayumi: namimili lang ako.
Jason: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for reading. Say I'm just shopping.

Jason: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the Philippines and someone asks you what you're doing. You want to respond that you’re just thinking. Respond to the question.
Mayumi: Anong ginagawa mo? (five seconds) Nag-iisip lang ako.
Jason: Now you want to say you’re just eating Respond to the question.
Mayumi: Anong ginagawa mo? (five seconds) kumakain lang ako.
Jason: Now you want to say you’re just reading. . Answer the speaker's question.
Mayumi: Anong ginagawa mo? (five seconds) nagbabasa lang ako.
Jason: Now you want to say you’re just shopping. Respond to the question.
Mayumi: Anong ginagawa mo? (five seconds) namimili lang ako.
Jason: You want to ask someone what they are doing. Ask the question
