Becky: Expressions of Disappointment
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to FilipinoPod101.com. I'm Becky.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
Becky: This is Must-Know Filipino Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 18. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions of disappointment.
Becky: When you feel disappointed about someone or about a situation, these expressions will help you convey what you mean to the other person or about the situation.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Becky: The expressions you'll be learning in this lesson are:
Jay: kuha mo
Jay: makikita mo
Jay: hay naku
Jay: pasaway
Becky: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: kuha mo
Becky: literally meaning "get it." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "understood?"
Jay: [SLOW] kuha mo [NORMAL] kuha mo
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: kuha mo
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression to check if someone understood you or not. Be careful when you use this word as a person of lower status/age can never use this with someone above them. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Kuha mo ba yun sinabi ko kanina? Pauna na rin please, para matapos na. [SLOW] Kuha mo ba yun sinabi ko kanina? Pauna na rin please, para matapos na.
Becky: "Did you understand what I said earlier? Could you do it first please so that we can get it over with."
Jay: [NORMAL] Kuha mo ba yun sinabi ko kanina? Pauna na rin please, para matapos na.
Becky: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: makikita mo
Becky: literally meaning "you'll see." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "don't you dare try."
Jay: [SLOW] makikita mo [NORMAL] makikita mo
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: makikita mo

Becky: Use this slang expression when you warn someone that there will be consequences if they don't listen. Be careful when you use this word. A person of lower status/age can never use this with someone with higher status/age. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Pag di ka umuwi bago mag 8pm mamayang gabi, makikikita mo! [SLOW] Pag di ka umuwi bago mag 8pm mamayang gabi, makikikita mo!
Becky: "Don't you dare try to come home after 8pm tonight."
Jay: [NORMAL] Pag di ka umuwi bago mag 8pm mamayang gabi, makikikita mo!
Becky: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: hay naku
Becky: It’s an abbreviation for
Jay: hay, nanay ko
Becky: meaning "sigh, my mother." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "my goodness."
Jay: [SLOW] hay naku [NORMAL] hay naku
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: hay naku

Becky: Use this slang expression when you interject about a situation when you feel frustrated.
Jay: There’s a slight difference between this expression and susmaryosep. Hay naku
Becky: can also refer to personal frustrations as well as others, while
Jay: susmaryosep
Becky: is usually frustration because of others. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Hay naku! Hindi na naman ako pumasa sa exam. Nag-aral naman ako nang mabuti. Pagod na ako. [SLOW] Hay naku! Hindi na naman ako pumasa sa exam. Nag-aral naman ako nang mabuti. Pagod na ako.
Becky: "My goodness! I didn't pass the exam again. I studied very well though. I'm tired."
Jay: [NORMAL] Hay naku! Hindi na naman ako pumasa sa exam. Nag-aral naman ako nang mabuti. Pagod na ako.
Becky: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: pasaway
Becky: When it's used as a slang expression, it means "naughty."
Jay: [SLOW] pasaway [NORMAL] pasaway
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: pasaway

Becky: Use this slang expression to describe someone who is naughty, uncooperative, or irresponsible. This doesn't exactly connote negative implications though. The person may also be perceived as cool - someone who doesn't care about the situation and is not pressured by circumstances. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Wag kang pasaway ha, John! Dumating ka on time bukas ha, para sa field trip. Baka ma late ka na naman. [SLOW] Wag kang pasaway ha, John! Dumating ka on time bukas ha, para sa field trip. Baka ma late ka na naman.
Becky: "Don't be uncooperative John! Please come on time tomorrow for our field trip. You might be late again."
Jay: [NORMAL] Wag kang pasaway ha, John! Dumating ka on time bukas ha, para sa field trip. Baka ma late ka na naman.
QUIZ
Becky: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I’ll describe four situations, and you’ll choose the right expression to use in your reply. Are you ready?
Becky: You reprimanded your child not to tell a lie. The next time he does, you will not let him play computer games anymore. You warn him by saying:
Jay: makikita mo
Becky: "don't you dare try"
Becky: You want to emphasize that he has to ride Bus number 1 and not bus number 2. You confirm it by asking him:
Jay: kuha mo
Becky: "understood?"
Becky: He’s not following the rules of the game. Instead of gestures only, he’s using sign language as well.
Jay: pasaway
Becky: "naughty"
Becky: Due to a collision on the road, you were stranded and couldn’t make it on time for an important meeting. You exclaim:
Jay: hay naku
Becky: "my goodness"
