Kamusta kayo, ako si Erica. Hi everybody! I’m Erica. |
Welcome to FilipinoPod101.com’s “Filipino sa 3 minuto”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Filipino. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask "Who" questions in Filipino. This time, we are going to ask “when” questions. |
Imagine you have planned to go to the movies with your friends but have not yet decided when. You can ask them: “Kailan tayo pupunta sa sinehan?” “When are we going to the movies?” |
[slowly] “Kailan tayo pupunta sa sinehan?” |
Let’s break down this question: |
First we have: “kailan,” which is "when" in Filipino. |
Then we have tayo, which means "we". |
Next is pupunta which is the future tense of the verb "punta,” “to go". |
Sa is a preposition which functions as “to”. |
And finally sinehan means "movie theater" |
So, altogether it is “Kailan tayo pupunta sa sinehan?” |
As we have discussed before, Filipino question words usually comes with a plural form. For “kailan” it is: “kai-kailan.” However it is not very commonly used. Instead we add certain words to “kailan” to ask about multiple times and other questions about time as well. |
Here are some useful words you could add to “kailan.” First, you could add “tuwing” making the question phrase “tuwing kailan.” Literally this means: “every when.” We use this to ask about someone’s schedule. For example: “Tuwing kailan ka pumupunta sa gym?” “When do you go to the gym?” |
You could also add: “simula” meaning “since,” to “kailan.” “Simula kailan ka pa nag-aaral dito?” “Since when have you been studying here?” |
On the contrary, you could also add: “hanggang” which means “until.” “Hanggang kailan ako maghihintay?” “Until when should I wait?” |
Now it’s time for Erica’s tips. |
Here’s another word you could add to “kailan:” “kahit.” “Kahit kailan” literally means “even though when” but it is what Filipinos use to mean “whenever” or “any time.” |
You could also add “kahit” to the previous question words we have already learned: |
“kahit ano,” “whatever,” “anything.” |
“kahit saan,” “wherever,” “anywhere.” |
“kahit sino,” “whoever,” “anyone.” |
Are you ready for the next Filipino sa 3 minuto lesson? Next time we will be discussing how to say yes or no questions. I’ll see you there! |
Hanggang sa muli! |
