Kamusta kayo, ako si Mayumi. Hi everybody! I’m Mayumi.
Welcome to FilipinoPod101.com’s “Filipino sa 3 minuto”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Filipino.
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about your age. In this lesson, we’ll continue to use the "to be" verb ay to talk about location. We’ll be learning how to say things like "I am on the street" or "He’s in the room." This will definitely be useful!
When you want to know where something or someone is, you use the question word Nasaan? which means “Where?” Like if someone asks you on the phone, Nasaan ka? “Where are you?”
Answering this question is very easy! Let me show you how.
You just say Ako ay nasa + the place you are.
Ako ay means “I am.”
nasa is used as a preposition of place. It can mean “at,” “in,” or “on.”
So for example, you can say Ako ay nasa kalye meaning "I am on the street"
[slowly] Ako ay nasa kalye.
Now let’s see a few other possible answers:
"I am at the office" would be Ako ay nasa opisina.
"I am in a meeting" would be Ako ay nasa miting.
"I am in a store" would be Ako ay nasa tindahan.
To talk about the location of other people and even things, you just need to change the subject Ako. For example: Si Mark ay nasa CR. “Mark is in the toilet.” or Ang lamesa ay nasa kusina. “The table is in the kitchen.”
What if you want to be more specific where things or people are? Here are some words to help you explain:
tabi ng: beside
ibabaw ng: on top of
ilalim ng: under
loob ng: inside
labas ng: outside
Just insert these between nasa and the place.
Ang gunting ay nasa ibabaw ng lamesa. “The scissors are on top of the table.”
Siya ay nasa labas ng pinto. “He or She is outside the door.”
Now it’s time for Mayumi’s Insights.
Unlike in English wherein the “to be” verb has different forms: am, is, are, the Filipino ay remains the same no matter the subject.
“I am in the classroom.” Ako ay nasa silid-aralan.
“They are in the room.” Sila ay nasa kwarto.
“You are at the house.” Ikaw ay nasa bahay.
Isn’t that convenient?
Now you know how to tell people where you are using the “to be” verb ay. Next time, we’ll learn how to talk about what you have. See you in the next Filipino sa 3 minuto. Hanggang sa muli!
